Comparative Patterns: where do I start?

1 min readAnalysis

Overview

Comparative Patterns compares how codes are used across groups of documents defined by a variable, for example gender, site or year. Choose One Variable to compare the groups of a single variable, or Two Variables to compare cells made by combining two variables. Then choose what to compare (for example the share of documents with a code, or the number of coded passages) and, if you wish, turn on Significance tests. The Hierarchy toggle shows sub-codes under their parent codes.

What to do

  1. Open Analysis › Frequencies & Comparison › Comparison › Comparative Patterns and choose One Variable or Two Variables.
  2. Pick the variable or variables, the measure and the code level (main codes or all codes).
  3. Check the group sizes before reading differences; small groups are marked.
  4. Switch on Significance tests only if your design allows them, then read the note under the table for what was tested.
  5. Download the figure or table, or add it to Results Builder.
