When should I use a Treemap?

1 min readAnalysis

Overview

A Treemap uses area to show the relative coded volume of codes or code groups. It is useful for a compact overview of a large codebook and for spotting imbalance between categories. Use it as an exploratory summary, then inspect the counts, document coverage, hierarchy, and evidence behind large or small areas. Find it under Analysis › Frequencies & Comparison › Treemap.

What to do

  1. Check what quantity controls rectangle area in the current view.
  2. Compare related codes within the same scope and filter state.
  3. Avoid interpreting area as conceptual importance without supporting evidence.

When to use it

  • To show the weight of main themes at a glance.
