What can I do in the Variables tab?

2 min readAnalysis

Overview

The Variables tab describes the variables that come with your documents, such as age, group or site. In the Variable explorer you choose one variable to see its distribution, how many values are missing, and a figure you can download. Numeric variables also show the minimum, median, mean and maximum. Under Relationships you compare how the categories of one variable are made up across the groups of another, and look at how two variables go together. Use it to understand your sample before you compare coding across groups.

What to do

  1. If the tab says no metadata fields were found, choose Add variables to open the document variables window, add your variables and values, then reopen Analysis.
  2. Open Analysis › Variables and choose a variable in the Variable explorer.
  3. Check missing values and small groups before using the variable to compare codes.
  4. Use Relationships to look at two variables together, then download or add the figure to Results Builder.
  5. Fix or add variable values in the document’s details if something looks wrong.
  6. Add to Results on the Document variables table adds a Sources and Their Labels table: one row per source with its number, label and variables. It is a captured copy, so changing the labels later does not change it.
  7. In the Document variables window, use the pencil beside a variable name to rename it and the bin to delete it. If you have unsaved changes, you are asked to save them first, and a delete tells you how many documents lose a value.

When to use it

  • To describe who is in your sample.
  • To check missing values before comparing groups.
